Short version: this site has no accounts, no newsletter and no advertising network. What follows is the detail.
What this site collects
Standard server request logs, and nothing else that identifies you. There is no account to create and no form that stores personal data.
Every page you request is recorded by the web server in the ordinary way: the address of the page, the date and time, your browser’s user agent string, and your IP address. These logs exist so the site can be kept working and so abuse can be blocked. They are not linked to a name, not sold, and not shared with advertisers.
Cookies
The site sets no tracking cookies and runs no advertising network. WordPress may set a functional cookie if you log in, which applies only to the site’s own editors.
Third parties
Two third parties see traffic to this site by necessity: our hosting provider, and Cloudflare, which sits in front of the site and filters malicious requests. Both process the same request data described above. The site loads its fonts from its own server rather than from an outside font service, so reading a page here does not make a request to a third party for typography.
Some guides link to outside websites, most often federal sources such as Ready.gov or the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Once you follow a link off this site, the privacy policy of that site applies rather than this one.
Email you send us
If you write to [email protected], that message sits in a normal mailbox. We keep correspondence so we can follow up on corrections, and we do not add anyone who writes to us to any list, because there is no list.
Your choices
- You can browse this site without giving any personal information at all.
- You can ask us to delete an email exchange by writing to the same address.
- You can block cookies entirely in your browser and every page here will still work.
Children
This site is written for adults running a household and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date below changes with it, and the change is described in a sentence rather than silently replaced.
