I’m preaching to the choir but it had to be stated. If you take a look at what is going on right now because of Hurricane Irma in Florida it is a classic case of why preparedness should be a critical part of one’s life. Folks are lined up around the block for bottled water that they will never get a chance to buy because the shelves are already empty, the next opportunity to collect supplies probably coming when the National Guard sets up a distro point.
People around Central Florida were already experiencing a shortage of supplies at grocery stores on Monday, but the managers of some big-box stores said they have reinforcements on the way and they did.
On Tuesday, shoppers lined up outside several stores, including Costco in Altamonte Springs, for a chance to get supplies, including water, batteries, and food.
“(It was) a little bit of a pandemonium,” shopper Diane Williams said. “Getting here was worse than being inside. It’s just that everybody is panicked, so they are preparing, which is wise, but it’s just, like, crazy.”

Patrick Sutton, the assistant manager at the Home Depot in Altamonte Springs, said the store ran out of generators on Monday and water and flashlights by Tuesday afternoon.
“I think everyone is more aware of what’s going on because of what happened with Harvey in Texas,” he said. “I was here in 2004 for Charley and it was not taken so seriously back then. Now, everybody is taking it more seriously, which allows them to get the supplies they need and gives us time to get the supplies soon enough.”

Home Depot Corporate launched its Rapid Response Team, sending trucks from Atlanta to Florida on Tuesday to restock the shelves across the state.
“My trucks are on the road right now and will be coming in the next days. We have a couple of more days before the storm hits, so we have more time,” Sutton said. “By the end of the week, they will have everything they need.”
Now, think about these components of preparedness and how they could apply in this situation.
Bugging In: Having the necessary supplies (food, water, even gasoline) on hand to stay in place for weeks even without power and without having to rely on outside sources. Even if the water supply became unusable for a period of time it would not be a major factor.
Bugging Out: Having all of the necessary supplies to quickly displace, be self-sufficient while on the move knowing that critical items were along for the ride. Ability to move without having to stop to refuel until out of the danger area, a secondary location already identified and ready/willing to accept visitors.
Security: Understanding that in long term power down scenarios there will be no shortage of folks looking to take advantage of thin law enforcement coverage. Having a security plan in place in order to address this.

First Aid: Folks could get hurt, not only have the equipment on hand (not just a first aid kit, but things like IFAKs, IV kits etc) but the training in order to employ these properly.
Communication: Cell phone coverage most likely will go down, having a secondary and tertiary plan (HAM radio).
I could go on and on but the main point is this: taking initiative and remaining proactive while times are good so that when the tough times come, the only difference is this is now a time for execution and not rehearsals. I’ve stated this many times if one is primarily prepping for EMP strikes and WW3 / Martial Law, priorities are misplaced! The greatest threat all of us face come in the form of localized or even wide spread natural disasters. Hurricanes, flooding, tornados, wildfires, earthquakes etc. It’s too late for the folks who are just now lining up hoping to catch a case of bottled water at the grocery store but hopefully many will learn from this experience….sadly most will not.

Had an epiphany while cleaning the wood burner chimney today. Why spend time collecting firewood, stocking food, insulating and sealing cracks, buying woolens & quilts. Why not just do what the Texa-flordians do…….. suntan, play inna water, “chill”, and when Winter/Hurricane hit ….. wait for GIFTS from the rest of the country and DEMAND help from the Government.
Let the rest of the country load me up with firewood and food and weather proof my house for me.
Those jerks get hit every 10 years and they act surprised. Like there have never been hurricanes before.
