Anyway, different ages have different needs. We once had to evacuate our apartment when pipes exploded and flooded the place. It took me about 20 minutes to stuff what I needed into a bag, which is about 19 minutes longer than it should have.
Like food storage, I doubt there’s a “perfect bug out bug” that would suit everyone. Use this as a starting point to figure out what you need in your family’s bug out bags.
Keep in mind that babies and small children will not be able to carry their own bags. And, of course, young children can not walk for long distances – so eventually, adults may find themselves carrying children and bags!

Important Files

During an emergency evacuation, you may have five minutes to grab everything you need, knowing that your home could be completely destroyed before you can return.
Your bug out bag should include physical copies of all:
-birth certificates
-passports
-homeownership or apartment lease papers
-drivers licenses
-insurance paperwork and contact numbers
-vehicle paperwork
As a backup, consider scanning all of this and keeping it on a portable USB key in your bag. Label it and fasten it to the inside of the bag so that it will not be accidentally knocked out and lost.

Pets and Livestock

In a large-scale emergency, pets and livestock are often a major problem. Emergency shelters often refuse animals. If you have a prior relationship with a vet clinic or animal kennel, consider asking them if they can be part of your emergency evacuation plan.
In an emergency evacuation, livestock is frequently a casualty. In the best of times, it is slow work to get terrified animals into a vehicle or animal trailer. However, sometimes the evacuation is preventative and there is time to remove livestock. For those cases, it may be worth having an arrangement with another farm to house your animals. This arrangement would need to be in place before an emergency, however.

Baby Bug Out Bags – adjust sizes for age

• Diapers – 12 plain cloth diapers  + 3 covers + 12 washcloths + 3 diaper pins
• Disposable diapers are fabulous if you know you won’t have water, but you’ll need more
• Clothing – one simple, complete, seasonally appropriate outfit, including seasonal hat
• Zinc ointment for rashes, scratches, etc.
• Baby carrier that you can comfortably wear for long periods
• One large receiving blanket
• One travel-sized sanitizing gel
• One bottle of age-appropriate Tylenol
• One complete baby bottle + One can powdered baby formula + Bottled water — Even for a breastfed baby!

For a baby over 6 months, plan for 72 hours worth of non-refrigerated food (easy for babies!)

For smaller children, keep a backpack carrier near the door and the bag(s).

• 6′ x 8′ Plastic Tarp, Twine and 4 – 10″ steel tent pegs – can make a tent with this

• 72 hours worth of portable food
• Hand-cranked radio
• Bottle of multi-vitamins – As a note, these DO expire, and they’ll mold!
• Bug repellant and sunscreen

Heavy Duty Bug Out Bags

You do NOT need a heavy duty military bag for a bug out bag, at least not when you are creating your first one. Any backpack or gym bag will work.
But when it’s time to upgrade, you will want to look at military bags that are designed for survival situations. Look at the various options carefully and decide what is required for your needs.
The first one on my list is the Tactical Assault Military Army Style Backpack By Monkey Paks. This one has a water bladder inside it that can hold 2 liters.

The material of the bag is made of tough nylon that resists water. You get plenty of compartments to keep your gear separated. Four of the compartments have zippers so you won’t have to worry about stuff jostling around.

The bag offers a space for your sunglasses that are lined with fleece to prevent scratches on the lens. The bag has compression straps for easy carrying. Extra attachment points make expanding the bag a breeze.

With the Paratus 3 Day Operator’s Pack Military Style MOLLE Compatible Tactical Backpack Bug Out Bag, you get a bag that’s completely customizable. This bag has the MOLLE system and other attachment features.

It’s made of strong nylon and has a center compartment that at 20″ by 12″ is perfect for carrying a bigger load. There are a padded waist belt and compression straps. You get double zippers so that you can get into the bag quickly if needed. The bag is compatible for use hydration bladders.
